Visit in Selby 2023:
Part 1:
After a very long 4 years, it was finally that time again. A small group of Filderstadt residents made their way to our twin town Selby. After the long journey, we were met by our hosts at Leeds Airport and enjoyed our first evening with our host families. We also spent the first day with our hosts, many of made a trip to nearby York. There we visited the various pubs, admired the old town with York Minster and walked along the city walls.
Part 2:
On Tuesday we went to Newby Hall together. The old manor house is located in a beautiful park and is still inhabited today. In winter, the part that we can visit is used by the family. We can even see the crown that Charles III worewhen he was crowned, admire (at least a replica, but we don't have to tell you that). After a picnic lunch we have the opportunity to explore the park. With a small boat, a small tourist train or simply on foot. In addition to countless colorful flowers, we can visit the dollhouse exhibition or the teddy bear museum. To end the day comfortably, we all go out for fish and chips with peas together.
Part 3:
On Wednesday we looked at the history of Selby and Selby Abbey. Divided into smaller groups, we climbed the tower of Selby Abbey and we did not only see the room where the "bell ringers" work, we even got a small audio sample. The bells of Selby Abbey are still rung manually today. Up to 13 bells in different sizes and depending on the occasion, sometimes for several hours. From the top we have a wonderful view over Selby and the surrounding area. The journey through the narrow stairs was definitely worth it. Once at the bottom we learn a lot about the history of Selby Abbey and the town of Selby. In the evening we were able to put our knowledge to the test at the pub quiz in the “Unicorn”.
Part 4:
On Thursday we visited a JukeBox Factory in Leeds. What initially didn't cause much enthusiasm among some people turned out to be a very interesting tour of a family business. The junior boss personally told us the history of the company and in the workshop we saw the individual steps in the production of the music boxes and were also able to take a look inside and see how the boxes work. The JukeBoxes are shipped all over the world. Afterwards we still have time to visit Leeds, where we enjoy English beer in the oldest pub.
Part 5:
The Drax Power Station is located in Selby, visible from afar thanks to its striking 12 towers. The former coal-fired power station has switched to alternative energy and supplies Selby and the surrounding area with electricity. The official meeting takes place in the evening. Before the buffet dinner, we dance under professional guidance and the atmosphere is immediately very funny and happy. All hosts receive very special wooden boards from the city of Filderstadt with the coat of arms of both cities and "20 years of twinning" and matching wooden salad servers.
Part 6:
Saturday is another family day. Everyone can use the day individually. So some people take a trip to the coast in the wonderful summer weather (no one should say anymore, it only rains in England). During a hike along the idyllic coastal path, we see countless birds breeding on the cliffs. On the last evening everyone meets at the Monk Fryston Community Center to drink, dance, talk,...
Part 7:
Today we unfortunately have to say goodbye again after a wonderful and eventful week with our English friends. On behalf of all participants, we would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to our hosts in Selby for their hospitality and the lovingly put together program. Also a big thank you to Tamara Postnikova from the city of Filderstadt, who organized the trip from Filderstadt. Everyone is looking forward to seeing you again, next year at the latest in Filderstadt.
